Gut microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles in psychiatric disorders

Senior researcher
North Denmark Regional Hospital

Suzette Sørensen, senior researcher, Center for Clinical Research, North Denmark Regional Hospital, has been awarded a Lundbeck Foundation LF Experiments research grant worth DKK 1,984,000.

This project will investigate so-called extracellular vesicles (mini cells) sent out by the bacteria as a possible route of communication from the gut to the brain. The hypothesis is that the gut microbiota affects psychiatric disorders through these vesicles, which will be analysed in ADHD and autism patients to evaluate if the content of these vesicles differs from non-affected controls. The perspectives are many, including new understandings of mechanisms behind psychiatric disorders, and could pave the way for new treatment options.
