Errors in cell division

Our cells are constantly dividing – both at the fetal stage and later, throughout our lives. And each time this happens, our DNA is replicated.
Most of these replications run smoothly. Sometimes, however, errors occur, and this can have serious implications, potentially resulting in developmental disorders or cancer.

Kumar Somyajit – 34, assistant professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark – will use his Lundbeck Foundation Fellowship to establish a research group that will investigate how a variety of factors affect DNA replication, and how a cell’s stress level can disrupt replication.

New knowledge in this field is especially important if we are to gain a better understanding of how cancer and other diseases are triggered at the fetal stage.

Kumar Somyajit is receiving a grant worth DKK 10 million.
