Silvia Arber

Professor & Senior Investigator
University of Basel & FMI

Silvia Arber obtained her PhD in Neurobiology from University of Basel, at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) in Basel, Switzerland. Today she is Professor of Neurobiology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel and a Senior Investigator at the FMI in Basel, Switzerland.

Silvia Arber’s laboratory identified key organizational and functional principles by which neuronal circuits orchestrate accurate and timely control of motor behaviour. Her work revealed how neuronal populations in the brainstem interact with spinal circuits to orchestrate skilled forelimb movement, locomotion or posture, establishing links between connectivity and function.

The studies highlight an amazing degree of organization for motor output pathways in the brain and spinal cord, with dedicated hubs/networks for action program diversification. These findings have high biomedical potential because they show how a specific action is generated by defined neuronal populations close to execution and how such neurons can be accessed for interventions in disease or injury.
