Peter Hegemann

Prof. Dr., Head
Humboldt University

Peter Hegemann went to the University of Münster in 1975 to study chemistry, transferring to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich two years later to study biochemistry. After graduating in 1980, he pursued his PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry. Currently, he is Prof. Dr., Head of experimental biophysics, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.

Peter Hegemann’s group studies the photobiology of green algae including phototaxis and developmental processes. He is also working to improve reverse genetics and structure function analysis of photoreceptors by establishing nuclear gene targeting in these lower plants. He is especially interested in studying unusual sensory photoreceptors including channelrhodopsins, enzyme rhodopsins, and flavin-based photoreceptors using electrophysiology, protein structure function analysis and time resolved spectroscopy for. He also works on photoreceptor design and engineering for optogenetic applications.

Brain Prize winner of 2013 for their invention and refinement of optogenetics
