Protein dynamics in the biology of the diseased brain

Professor
University of Copenhagen

Kristian Strømgaard receives DKK 20 million in funding from the Lundbeck Foundation's Collaborative Projects programme

In this project, entitled "Regulation of biomolecular condensates at PSD: balancing of diseased states of neurons' signals", professor Kristian Strømgaard, University of Copenhagen, will investigate a recently discovered biological phenomenon; the formation of biomolecular condensates by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS).

Together with Chinese researchers led by Professor Mingjie Zhang, he will investigate how this new emerging field can potentially lead to completely new treatments for disorders such as autism, schizophrenia and intellectual disability.

The collaboration between the two research groups in Denmark and China will create opportunities for delivering ground-breaking results within this new field, where researchers will investigate LLPS of postsynaptic density (PSD) proteins with a focus on their role in neurological disorders.

This will provide an endeavor towards entirely new principles for understanding the diseased brain and it will hopefully provide new therapeutic opportunities.

- We are throwing ourselves into a new and exciting area that will shed light on proteins in the brain and their dynamics.  I look forward to working with Mingjie Zhang, who is a very good colleague of mine and a true pioneer in this area," says Kristian Strømgaard.

Co-applicant and partner in the project are:
  • Professor Mingjie Zhang, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen, Kina
