Carmen Sandi

Carmen Sandi is a Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), where she is the Director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics at the Brain Mind Institute. She served 7 years as the Director of the EPFL Brain Mind Institute (2012-2018), and is currently the co-Director of the Swiss Center for Competence in Research Synapsy and founder and co-President of the Swiss Stress Network.

Her work explores the impact and neurobiological mechanisms whereby stress and anxiety affect brain and behavior, with a current focus on the contribution of brain mitochondria and metabolism. Her lab adopts an integrative research program in rodents and humans that span from a whole range of neurobiological approaches to the use of neuroimaging and virtual reality.  

She was the President of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS; 2018-2020) and President of the Cajal Advanced Neuroscience Training Program (2019-2020) and currently serving as Immediate Past-President for both organizations. She is the Founder and Chair of the ALBA Network (2018-2021), and former President of the European Brain and Behavior Society (EBBS; 2009-2011).

Carmen Sandi has received a number of national and international awards, including the first Ron de Kloet Prize for Stress Research (2018) and the John Scott Award on Aggression Research (2020). She was awarded the Valkhof Chair at Radboud University (2015) and a Distinguished Visiting Scientist position at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2015). In 2016, she was sabbatical professor at the Rockefeller University. She was also the founding Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience (2007-2014) and is currently editorial board member for numerous journals. She is a member of the Wellcome Science Panel (2019-2021), and served as Panel leader for UK MQ Mental Health (2015-2017) and the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grants LS5; 2010-2015).
